The Right Shade Of Grey

The trouble with grey is the finding the hidden color behind the scenes. You have to ask yourself “do I have a blue gray, a green gray, a brown grey…..” and then make sure all materials being selected are the right shade of grey. The homeowner wished to expand the kitchen and transform this subdivision home into her place of respite. Finding one material you love and building from it is greatly helpful in guiding decisions. When the owner and I first met she had floor tiles, granite samples, backsplash tiles and paint colors that she had collected and liked individually, but when she put them together they simply clashed and she felt like she was going in circles. I had her pick from these her favorite piece, which happened to be a beautiful dolomite counter called Super White and from there we picked all of the materials to highlight the grey that was in that sample.

Next was the expansion. She had already commenced construction on pushing the living wall out to align with the kitchen nook. This allowed an additional three feet of storage and counter space and thus created a pass thru to make is easier to connect with guests in the living room while preparing food. The additional counter space on this side allowed an increase of pantry storage across the kitchen and a general improvement of accessibility and storage solutions were incorporated while leaving the appliances in their established locations. The end result achieved the balance she desired and it’s onto the next phase, enjoying the fruits of labor.
