After renovating four houses in thirteen years, this family finally had the chance to design and build their own home. Drawing from their many experiences, they were clear about their preferences but found the endless possibilities a bit daunting. They reviewed twenty different concept plans before settling on a 1,500-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bath house featuring an open-concept layout blending ranch, farmhouse, and modern-industrial styles. The great room changed from having a dedicated dining area to placing the dining table next to the kitchen island with a waterfall countertop. This adjustment created extra space for both the living room and kitchen. To enhance privacy, the two bedrooms are separately accessed, one positioned near the laundry for the homeowners, and the other close to an office for guests. Each bedroom comes with its own private bathroom. With covered patios on three sides, the compact house extends its indoor-outdoor living and entertainment areas. While previous renovations encouraged playful use of color and materials, the choices for this home were classic: a palette of white, black, and natural tones. The exterior combines standing seam metal for the main wing, slump block for the bedroom section, and smooth stucco for the garage, creating a barrio-inspired appearance. Inside, creams and beiges set a calm foundation, accented by bold blacks and rich wood elements for a look that’s both crisp and welcoming.
