The owners patiently waited to find and purchase this original 1960’s Mid Century home that had not been modified. Quickly they learned of some challenges that came with the era of individualized spaces and the aging materials. They were looking to tastefully update and integrate the kitchen to be more user friendly. Starting with analyzing the surrounding spaces, it was determined that the laundry room could be closed in and the dining room could be in an adjacent ‘undefined’ room allowing the original kitchen and small dining to combine to make an eat-in kitchen. The trick was removing a wall and patching in terrazzo, a new location for all the kitchen appliances and incorporating the unique ceiling coffer and maintaining the sliding doors. Flat panel, high-gloss, white cabinets with white terrazzo floors and white quartz counters are all low maintenance but could be seen as austere. Creating a tile feature wall, adding floating wood shelves, and layers of light balanced this with the addition of a few classic accessories in the bar stools and Nelson clock.
