Every House Has a Story To Tell

Collaborating with a local designer, Kathryn Prideaux who specializes in Mid Century Modern aesthetics, we proved two brains are better than one. The homeowners wanted to stay true to the construction and style while taking advantage of modern conveniences. In the design phase, we explored moving the kitchen completely to the other side of the dining room and different orientations of the island in the current space with some expansion. The final decision was to leave the major station, the sink, under the window and extend into the dining area without taking it over.

Then it was up to Kathryn to set the tone. She selected a white on white classic theme with high gloss cabinetry and Quartz counters that had the feel of Terrazzo. A few other touches, such as matching the wood framing the unique windows to some floating shelves around the cooking area and the pop of teal color with subway tile to set them off were keys to the success of the final product. While the old asbestos tiles had left their imprint on the concrete, it was decided that it enhanced the story of the house rather than detracted. Finally, the island was capped on either end with waterfall sides and a classic white subway tile was added for durability at the eating bar.
